Crazy Weather in Otter Tail Country

Well Spring has sprung, according to the calendar, but Mother Nature seems to be refusing to get over Winter.

It looked as if warm temperatures and dry conditions were here to stay last week, this week brought snow, slush, and rain - with a possible winter storm this weekend! We're not really sure what to make of the weather.

We're hoping anyone affected by flooding this Spring will have adequate time and resources to protect their homes. We can't wait for the weather to turn around - it's almost lake season!

Spring-ify Your Lake Place

Well once again the weekend is over just as fast as it came. One highlight we had was Friday night at the Fargodome, where we attended the rodeo. Although the animals seemed to outsmart the cowboys this time around, it was still a good show. Other than that the weekend wasn’t much to write home about. I did find a good way to add some ambience to help freshen up your cabin this spring.

-Have Scents Appeal: Smells have the amazing power to dictate a mood. Boil some cinnamon sticks in water for a few minutes to get a warm, homey aroma. Or put some lemon, lime, and orange slices (with peel) in a cute bowl for an upbeat, citrusy fragrance. A fistful of fresh herbs like basil or rosemary in a small vase or jar will give off a sensual exotic perfume.

-Turn Up the Heat: A crackling fire generates a comfy feel anytime of the year. If you don’t have a fireplace—or it’s too warm outside for the real deal – pop in a DVD version, like Ambient Fire (firedvd.com).

-Add Some Playful Stuff: Ambience doesn’t have to be about getting intense. A string of lights will keep the tone in your place breezy and fun. Wrap it around a large picture frame, a plain lamp, or your mantle. Just take a pass on multicolored strands – they’re too Christmassy.

-Bring Nature Inside: Seashells or other natural elements like river stones are unexpected and give a casual feel. Fill a rough-hewn bowl with a bunch you collected on vacation, or prick up a bag at a craft store. Place it where you would normally display a bouquet of flowers.

-Encourage Browsing: A large stack of books on an end table invites guests to kick back and flip through them. Throw an old photo album or cool picture book into the mix for variety.

-Sound It Out: Make playlists for individual occasions. Chilling over dinner with your guy, having the girls visit for brunch and really consider what you’re craving in the situation. If you’re having a party, start with light tunes that you can talk over. Then segue into more upbeat dance songs as the night goes on and people get more wild.

-Go Big with Candles: Here’s a chance to add some drama to your place. If you want to stick with votives, put them in surprising vessels, like eclectic teacups or clay gardening pots. For a bold statement piece, add different-colored wax tapers to a thrift-store candelabra and feature it prominently on your table.

So while you’re hanging out waiting for the snow to melt, add a different touch to your cabin. It’ll sure to be noticed.

MN: Snow geese trickling into region - Outdoor News, Inc: News

Snow Geese at Bosque del ApacheImage via Wikipedia
Minnesota isn't known as the snow goose hunting mecca that our neighbors to the west (North Dakota and South Dakota) are, but we do get some through our region every spring.

There's a special hunting season in Minnesota in the Spring just for these white geese that fly in outrageous flocks. The limits are generally very liberal and even then hunters aren't taking quite enough of these birds - they're overpopulated and do some serious damage on the tundra they nest on in the spring and summer before their trip back south in the Fall.

Reports of birds being seen just south of us here in Otter Tail Country near Watson, MN have us excited - that means it's not long until the birds are here for part of their journey.

From Outdoornews.com:
In Minnesota, the season for snow geese, including blue-phase geese and the smaller Ross' geese, opened March 1. It closes April 30. There is no bag limit. A spring light goose permit is required and may be obtained through any DNR license agent, online, or by calling (888) 665-4236. There is a $3.50 permit application fee.
I hope any of you interested in spring snow goose hunting get a chance to hunt them - this is a great opportunity to get your shotgun out of the cabinet a few months before Fall hunting season.

DNR license fees could rise, change structure | The Fergus Falls Daily Journal

The Minnesota DNR has proposed some changes to the licensing process for hunters and anglers, and fees could be on the rise if Governor Mark Dayton approves the bill.

The idea behind the fee hikes is to bring more money into the program and serve a larger portion of sportsmen and women by increasing the accessibility of licenses in the state.

The fees will go up for non-residents as well as residents, but there shouldn't be too much trouble - Minnesota has some of the most affordable in-state licensing in the nation.

Spring Cleaning at the Lake

Happy first day of Spring!

The snow is melting fast and the water is rising! So guess what that means?! Yup, spring-cleaning. To me this always seems to be a fresh start after that long droopy winter, and cleaning the lake place is equally as important as cleaning at home. Just having the chance to have a window or two open for a few hours to let those darn dust bunnies out, or letting a rug hang out side to air out for a little bit makes a huge difference in houses and cabins. LET THAT SUNSHINE IN!

What I always like to start with is of course my living room and kitchen. I usually end up moving everything out of those rooms and just dust and sweet/mop/vacuum and scrub my walls! You would never expect to see that much dirt but man does it feel good to get it out of there!

From the living room and kitchen I move on to the bedrooms. Flip those mattresses and Febreeze those pillows! Don’t forget all those dust bunnies that may have gotten gathered under the dressers and in the back of the closets.

While you’re doing all this why don’t you send your man out to the garage and get him cleaning in there. Everyone knows that there is tons of sand built up in there from the cars over the winter! And he probably didn’t keep it all that organized over those months when it wasn’t that fun to be out there (Strange how that works out).

So get cleaning and erase that nasty ole winter out of your house. End your spring-cleaning by adding a nice bright bouquet of flowers to your kitchen. It’ll definitely light up the room!

Area News: Battle Lake students learn and fish

Students from Battle Lake Elementary school went to Molly Stark Lake on an ice fishing adventure this past Friday, March 11th.

They didn't have the best of luck, only catching three perch, but the kids still had fun.

From the Fergus Falls Journal:

On Friday, the fifth and sixth grade classes at Battle Lake elementary school took traveled to Molly Stark Lake in Glendalough State Park to go ice fishing. Overall, they caught three perch, but the kids didn’t seem to mind. They studied their fishing holes intently and played in the snow cover on the lake, throwing snowballs and wrestling.

The day on the lake is in its third year, and the kids earned it by completing the school’s MinnAqua curriculum. MinnAqua is a DNR program designed to teach people of all ages about stewardship of lakes and water, as well as fishing safety and the ins and outs of lake ecosystems. This is the third school year that the Battle Lake school has used the curriculum for the fifth-grade class.

The goal of the trip is to teach the students about biology, and having so many lakes so close to the school, the ice fishing trip is a great teaching tool.

Make a Tic Tac Tackle Box

This is a great, simple tip for those of us who keep a fishing rod and reel under the seat of their pickup just in case you can sneak away for an hour at lunch time to the local fishing hole. Sure, a tackle box doesn't have to take up a lot of room, but why not make your own - and make it fit in your pocket?

The Field and Stream blog, which we happen to enjoy thoroughly, posted quite a few DIY tips and tricks recently, and this one was included. All you need to do is empty the insides of a Tic Tac box, find a small, circular, retractable box cutter (you can find companies that give these out as promotions or find them at your local hardware stores), and round up the basics and you can be fishing in no time.

Glue the box cutter to the outside of the empty Tic Tacs container, put in a few split shot weights, a length of fishing line, some hooks and swivel snaps and you're set.

Otter Trail Riders Snowmobile Trail Report

The trail is in great shape with the new snow we received over the weekend.  Groomers will not be out due to the hard base, however there could be some bare spots in areas, but they are at a minimum. This is some excellent spring riding, get out and enjoy!

10 Excellent Trips for Planning Your Otter Tail Country Vacation

Minnesota State Highway shield - Uses Type D F...Image via Wikipedia
Alright, this article might not be just for your trip to a lake resort this summer - we know not everyone who reads our blog will make it to Otter Tail Country this year (but we hope you'll make it here sometime!).

We found this post to have some great tips for planning any vacation, although some of them lean more towards international travel (and hey - Otter Tail Country loves international visitors!).

Our favorites?

Tip 1: Do not over plan!

The article doesn't suggest "not plan", but over planning can lead to more stress than it saves. Have a loose itinerary so you don't forget any of your major travel goals, but remember to have fun and be spontaneous.

Tip 3: Do not blow your travel money at home

Nobody likes huge bags when they're traveling. There are also plenty of places to shop for certain things (a locally made bathing suit for the beach, jewelry made with materials native to the area you're traveling, a hat from your resort's gift store) that you *could* shop for at home, but really don't need to. It's also nice to help out the economy of the locale you're visiting.

Tip 10: Relax!

You'll be stressed before you leave if you don't have all the loose ends tied up at home - so be sure to take care of all the little things like who's watching the house, making sure your bills are paid, and maybe even have the house cleaned up before you go.

Please read the rest of the article, especially if you're going to be going out of the country - this article shows you some great pointers to make the most of your vacation.

Late February/Early March Ice Fishing for Bluegills

Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)Image via Wikipedia
I know we're a little late on this one, but not by much - we found a nice article on ABC Newspapers about late season ice panfishing.

The article points out what many of us know - walleye fishing slows down quite a bit this time of year but some of the best panfish action can be had in late February and early March.

From the article:

Finding hot pockets of mid-winter bluegills isn’t all that tough and includes locating the deeper holes and breaks near shallow summer haunts. You will need to seek out weed-covered flats and shallow vegetation.

As the winter season progresses bluegills tend to move off and down from shallow cover and will often stack up in deeper water. When they do, these fish can be found holding tight to the bottom to as much as five to 10, or even more — up and off.

The article also points out some key points that are always important for fishing for bluegills and other panfish - your gear is just as important as the time of year. Ultra small baits and lures are key, as are top-notch electronics - a depth finder or even an underwater camera.
