MN DNR Fishing Report from 8/5/10

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, walleye fishing is going strong. The bite is still hot, which is great news because the weather has been so great lately. The more time on the lake, the better!

Due to the heat, walleyes in Otter Tail Country are sitting in deeper water - from about 20-30 feet deep, according to DNR officials. Night crawlers and leeches seem to be the bait of choice, but if leeches aren't available in your area right now, use artificial lures made to mimic leeches - slimy ones are best.

After dark, the bite continues, but 'eyes are moving into shallower water. Anglers will have luck using plugs to attract attention in the evening.

If you're looking for northern pike, stick with buzz baits around thick weed patches (cabbage weeds seem to be their favorite right now). It's hard to beat the fight of a big northern!

We found a link to the MN DNR's email with details here. Included are reports and tips for all over Minnesota, including area specific websites and phone numbers.

Good luck and happy fishing!
